thrifting....

Our Goodwill is new and still really unknown so that's why I think they don't get the super good stuff like the DAV site does. Of course they don't charge $8 for a cotton shirt either like the DAV does. They have great clothes, but the other stuff is really not thrilling. I had to get blood work done for my check-up so I stopped by on the way home.

I start in the ladies suits and jackets and Jackpot! Found three great all wool jackets. $5.99 for 2 and $4.99 for one. I love the dark gray with the red big check. This will make great stuff like backgrounds and stuff for Christmas. Normally I wouldn't be so excited about finding camel and navy but look at the back of that jacket...NO SEAM!! Both the camel and the navy have no seam so that's a big wool section with no backing. That's 28 inches long and 18" WIDE between shoulders and 22" wide in the waist. That's a huge piece of uninterrupted wool. Both can be used for the background or base of a nice table piece, or pennie rug, or Christmas stockings, pillows...so many things. Then I wandered around the rest of the store and found a cute little nativity set. It has a little wooden base under the bottom that they sit on. Who can't use a second set for the house.

We don't have a DAV thrift store here but many, many others. I think it's outrageous the prices they charge for stuff here in FL. You would have such a good time though.

Good finds on the jackets with no back seam. I have a friend who uses the parts of the jackets with the interfacings that are fused on. Would not be my choice but it seems to work for her.
I stop in a thrift store every now & then that has items there that have been in the store as long as I have been going. They will not reduce the price. The shop is so overloaded that you can barely walk in there. I don't know how they pass fire inspections.

Well here in Australia I do not even know what a DAV store is but have finally after about what seems like a 10 yr, maybe five year gap, have tackled my wardrobe.
Being one of the cuddly ones who goes from cute cuddly to very very cuddly I have an equal range of clothes and am at the top end of the unhappy range at the moment. So have one huge bag of clothes in case I shrink again....and three full humungus bags to go to the Op or Opportunity shops as we call them. But I almost got sad when your post took me from people being glad to find nice clothes to wear to work to people cutting them up. I have to admit to buying evening clothes for crazy quilting...but it is quite funny....had not thought of anyone cutting these up. Had considered them going in the scrap bin to be recycled but cut.....mini sobs.
I will drop them and run...and in the meantime I am glad you have found some great things to play with. An Aussie quilt made with wool is called a WAGGA and I have yet to make one but I did find two bundles of suiting scraps to start me off ...bought them a few years back.

I like the wool with the red strip, I know you'll put these to good use. Excellent find on the nativity set, I like to browse the thirty store once in a while.
